This week is Small Business Week . The theme of this year’s theme according to the Business Development Bank of Canada is “Power Up Your Business – Invest. Innovate. Grow.”
On September 8th, 2011, President Obama stated “Everyone here knows that small businesses are where most new jobs begin.” Bloomberg Businessweek writer, Charles Kenny states in his article “Rethinking the Booseterism of Small Business“, “the notion that small business is the force behind prosperity is not true. The longer the U.S. and other countries cling to this myth, the harder it will be to carry out the kinds of economic policies that might actually stimulate job growth.” An interesting thought particularly with the “Occupy Wall Street” protests happening worldwide.
Frequently I hear business owners blaming the economy when they are failing to reach targets set for themselves. External factors are always on the move – some will help you, others will not. As a business owner it is up to you to take the steps necessary to control what you can to maximize the positive impacts and limit the negative impacts. Sometimes easier said than done but it comes with being a leader. Small businesses are a significant force in each community but their actual business volume is on the small side. The time has come for small business owners to start thinking bigger so they can have more of an impact on the overall economy.
As a small business owner today there are so many wonderful resources available to you to turn your business from so-so to fabulous. Business owners are leaders, and in many instances they are also the heart and soul of their business. Whether you are a solo-preneur (that one person business) or lead a small business with a team working for you, now is the time to take the steps to “power-up” and become an economic force.
What do you have in place to help you …
- connect with your customers,
- operate more efficiently and
- leverage your skill and income?
Not sure? Well, you are not alone! What supports do you need? Are the skills within your business, or do you need to outsource?
To Power Up your business, it is important to spend time working on your business with a CEO mentality, instead of working in your business as a ‘worker-bee’.
If what you are doing today isn’t working and giving the results you strive to achieve, its time for a change. A 19 degree turn may be all that is needed. A mastermind group or Executive Coach are two great supports that will help you step back, look bigger and clearer at the direction you want to go and the plan you undertake.
