Showcasing Your Business to Achieve Results!

I am thrilled at the opportunity to be able to showcase my business, Ignite Leadership International® at the Burnaby Board of Trade’s Showcase & Expo on May 25, 2017 from 2:30 – 6:30 pm.

This showcase includes over 50 B2B exibitors, over 500 attendees to network with, and an oppotunity to particiate in three new seminars.

Why is it important to showcase your business?

As a small business, one of the major stumbling blocks to growing your business is lack of awareness by potential clients.  People can’t do business with you if they don’t know you exist.  Imagine that!!

When you participate in a trade show event, or have a display table at a seminar or community event, you open up the doors and let people know you are in the marketplace.  You never know who may walk by your booth or display and recognize how you can solve their problem.

What is your goal in participating?

I was in the unfortunate position of having to step away from my business for almost 8 months,  Despite several attempts to return earlier, I was unable to speed my return.  As such, my client base dried up when exisiting projects came to a conclusion during my absence.  Although I faced a huge obstacle in rebuilding my business after this break, I was confident building new relationships and reconnecting with prior clients and colleagues would help fast track the process.

Making a connection with as many business leaders as I can and sharing a bit of what I do became the focus of my efforts.  Notice, my goal for the showcase is not to sell.  Why?  Because people want to business with people they know, like and trust.  The showcase is exactly that.  An opportunity to tell the 500+ attendees what is going on in my business world and what solution(s) I have to offer.


Create a Theme or Focus

Most businesses have a wide range of products and services they offer to customers.  It is difficult to try and sell to everyone.  Find out what kind of people will be attending the show and create a theme or focus that will appeal to a majority of those attending.  You goal is to attract as many people to your booth as possible so you have an opportunity to make a great impression.  If you don’t narrow your focus, you may look too scattered and they may rule you out!

Have other materials not on display for other areas of your business to share if needed — better yet, get their card and offer to send the information by tomorrow.


Once you know your goal, what next?

Conversation is King!

During the showcase itself, it is important to have knowledgable personnel in attendance at your booth

or display table at all times during the trade show, or when display tables are open.  You want to try to engage as many people as you can in short, inquiry style conversations.  You want to learn as much as you can about them.  Ask for their business card for a draw and record a few details about them on the card to help you in the follow-up after the show.  Remember, at the show, you are the star and should shine!

Collateral has a supporting role!

It is important to have some collateral for you to share with attendees – flyers, rack cards, etc.   I usually also have a calendar that allows me, and those helping in my booth, to book meetings (in person or phone) on the spot, where I know I have time available.  Booking an appointment while you are front of mind with your potential customer helps you move along the know, like and trust scale faster.  

If you have a book or another small item people can purchase at the show that supports your The Winning Way my covertheme/focus, by all means offer it for sale. Have lots of change in a cash box or use a web-based payment app to accept payments quickly and easily. Have someone available to process these transactions for you so you can focus on your staring role!

Don’t overlook other Exhibitors

It is important to interact with other exhibitors during slower times of the show.  This offers two benefits.  One, you can introduce yourself and your business – give them your business card.  Secondly, you can learn about them and what they do, and obtain their business card.  Look for opportunities to help each other.  Do you have a similar target client?  Do you have products/services which could align nicely and help both of you grow business?

Leaders measure resultsAfter each tradeshow, determine how much collateral was used, how many business cards you received in your draw, how many are good leads, and how many did you move along your sales funnel process?  What was your return on investment?


The Follow-Up Rules

Like every staring role, its what comes next that can make or break the outcome!  If you have collected a number of business cards or booked appointments, respond to every person within 24 hours or less!  Yes, I said 24 hours or less!  Have something new to share them.  I frequently use an e-book or my chapter in “The Winning Way” or a recent article, tool or resource that reponds to the theme shared in my booth.

Once you have made that initial follow-up contact, continue to work your sales funnel system to build a trusting relationship and hopefully move them from potential customer to current customer!

Is your Vision eluding You?

When setting goals and a vision, it is recommended to stretch to new heights to help you grow and be more

successful.  Why does your vision elude you if you are willing to do what it takes to reach it?  Is your vision so lofty it’s unrealistic?

Interestingly enough, most successful business leaders I work with do not lack for ideas of what they want to achieve, nor do they have goals and visions that are so lofty they can’t attain them.  In fact, the opposite is true – they have an abundance of great goals and most turn those goals into reality.  Yet, there are always those goals that elude even the most successful.


Why does this happen?

  1. a) For some, their vision for the future was so far from their current reality they are unable to bridge the huge divide.  This results in lowered expectations and settling for a lesser, yet acceptable result.
  2. b)  Others just give up on this lofty goal altogether and opt to pursue another, more “realistic” goal.
  3. c)  And others stay the course and pursue their vision but struggle to achieve the results they envisioned, facing obstacles or set-backs, or distractions along the way.

Is Avoiding the Pain Worth Foregoing Success?

Did you know that 50% of people who start an exercise program drop out within 6 months?  That statistic is high, but it is similar in other areas of our lives too, including goal attainment!  To me that is sad.  50% of people never attain their goals!  Why?

Well there are many reasons… too many to discuss here.  Some never set concrete goals — this way they don’t get let down.  Drifting through life may seem like a great idea but you’ll stay where you are or fall behind!  Some people don’t write down their goals so they are unable to stay focused on what needs to be done to achieve the goal.  As the saying goes…”failing to plan is planning to fail”.

Here are a few more key obstacles you may face in reaching your goals and some questions to ask yourself and actions to take so you become the 50% who do attain their goals!

1.  Change is challenging!

Yes, change is challenging.  Change causes temporary pain… and who wants pain?  Isn’t life challenging enough without adding new challenges?  Having said that, if you want different results you have to implement different tactics or use different processes.  Change forces you outside your comfort zone. You cannot operate on autopilot and you have to make time.

We are now in the middle of February.  Did you set goals for 2012 in January?  Are you still working the plan to achieve those goals or have they slipped to the side so you can deal with “today”.  If you pushed them aside, do you have a plan to bring them back to the forefront so they become integrated with your business or career?  If not, why?  What are you avoiding?  Why are these goals taking a back seat to putting out today’s fires?  Will these goals, if accomplished, solve the types of challenges you are facing today?

As challenging as it is, change is necessary for you to grow and develop so you make your goals and dreams your new reality.  No one said life (or business) was easy.  No one said you have to do it alone either.   Can your team assist you?  Would journalling help keep you on track?  Would a coach or mastermind group provide the insights and support needed when times are tough?

2. Want great results with little effort!

How many times have you wished you could have the goal without doing the work?  I know every time I am doing my fitness routine I wish the inches and weight would just melt away so I didn’t have to work so hard.    Determination, persistence and effort are all needed for change.  Great results occur when we change our thinking, our actions or our effort!  Nothing comes for free!

Consider this:  You have a goal  that you’re passionate about.  It’s a goal you really want to achieve, but there are critical steps along the way that you don’t like doing (or maybe you just don’t know how to do them).  This is normal if you are stretching into new areas.  Yet, you consciously or sub-consciously procrastinate or just don’t take action.

This is where the perceived pain of these critical steps (no matter how large or small they may be in reality) become a huge barrier to your progress.  When you exert a little effort to shift your mindset from negative to positive, why does it always seem less onerous than you thought?.  How is it, when you shift your thinking, you can identify new opportunities or approaches to reduce the pain!.  As Nike says, Just Do It!  If you don’t want to do these critical steps, can they be delegated, outsourced, or incorporated into other tasks to save money and time?

3.  Time

The biggest excuse in the book… I have no time!  I know, we all feel like that at times but there are ways to overcome this obstacle too.  Why is it some people are so much more productive and successful in the same 24 hours you have?  What are they doing different that would allow you to achieve the same results?

Creating efficient and effective processes is one way to achieve more in less time.  Are routine tasks being done in a way that helps you move forward, grow or save time or money?  Time is money!

Things can get out of hand when people fail to create new habits.  Habits take persistence and consistency.  There is no “success pill”.   If you fall off the horse… get back up and keep riding.  The same holds true for your goals.  If you stray, reposition yourself and get back on track (even if its a new direction) that will lead you to success!

My challenge to you…. go back and revisit those strategic goalsBreak them down into bite-sized goals and schedule time into your calendar each week   Value Yourself!!  Reach out for help and support from others to keep you focused on the big picture, particularly

When an Opporunity Appears – Will You be Ready?

As an avid hockey fan, I often find great examples from sporting events that can apply to the business world.  The most recent was the decision by the Montreal Canadiens to play their 3rd string goalie in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Final  rather than the more experienced back-up.  Tokarski was recently called up from the AHL and is now in his debut post season game.  Tokarski is obviously lacking some NHL experience with only 10 NHL games under his belt, but he has lots of experience and wins in big games throughout his career.

How does this relate to business?

In the above example, franchise goalie Carey Price was injured  in Game 1 and was unable to play for the remainder of this series.  The injury was unexpected and created an opportunity for his teammates.

This is no different to business situations where a potential client may unexpectedly have a need for your product/services.  Would you be able to step up and “play big”?

In business, similar opportunities present themselves.  It is up to you to be prepared.  This may mean having to set up systems, learn new skills before you need them, hire staff in advance of getting that next job — all so you can act quickly to capitalize on the opportunity.

It also means you have to be nimble.  One of the situations that was presented to me was a project to evaluate a specific team and construct action plans to reach best practices.

In this instance I needed someone with specific experience to bring more value to the project.  I quickly explored my contact lists, identified possible connections and found the ideal person.  My client signed off on their addition to the team and the assessment began.   Soon this project morphed into new opportunities which kept my team working for 2 years.

Is It Your Time?

As I sit here today – the last day of 2012 I find myself reflecting on the opportunities, changes and successes of the past year.  This time last year, I was looking forward to a year of growth and development after undergoing a huge transformation in my business.  Well… the year didn’t disappoint!
