Internal Motivation – Born or Learned?

When you have a goal that you want to achieve, what keeps you motivated to do what it takes to succeed?  A recent discussion with colleagues had us exploring this exact question.

In my opinion, people fit into three categories…

  1. High Internal Self-Motivation  These people are highly motivate and require little to no external sources to keep them focused on their goal.  When they hit a challenging period, they are able to dig deeper within themselves, or they willingly ask for help to resolve the obstacle or overcome a set-back
  2. Good Self-Motivation These people are quite successful but when the going gets tough, they look externally for support and motivation.  If the external supports aren’t in place, they can flounder.
  3. Low Self-Motivation  These people have a short term attention span for their goals.  They thrive on instant or short term successes but lack the long-term focus to sustain this motivation for longer periods.  Could this be due to a lack of clarity with what they want to achieve?

 Which category do you belong?

Each of us is most likely a blend of all three, depending on the activity we must do.  The more passionate you are about a goal or outcome, the more motivated you become to achieve it.  When procrastination sets in, your motivation is lower, even when you know the task or goal is one you want to attain.    It can be challenging when your motivation wains.  This can happen more easily when you face a lot of challenges before you can achieve your ultimate goal or successes are too far in the distance.

Be aware of where your motivation is for any goal or project you work on.  Take steps to establish milestones that you can celebrate along the way to keep you focused and motivated.  If your motivation is waning, consider a mastermind group, a coach or use a journal to keep your motivation on target.

Without inspiration the best powers of the mind remain dormant.

There is a fuel in us which needs to be ignited with sparks.
